Swedish Grammy Awards 2007: Best Solo recording

Staffan Mårtensson has started a very brillant year 2007 : he received in last january three prices, Sweden Grammis Award / Best Soloist of the year 2007, Sweden, Nomination in MIDEM / Cannes 2007, category “contemporary music” and the price of the Best CD 2006 in the Sweden Radio in Stockholm. He has in the last decade established himself as one of Scandinavia’s leading clarinetists. His repertoire includes all the well-known master-pieces for his instrument by Mozart, Brahms, Weber, Debussy and Schumann, as well as works by 20th-century composers such as Berg, Messiaen, Stockhausen and Berio.
In 1990, after having finished his studies in Stockholm, Rotterdam, Banff and Paris, Mårtensson was a first prize winner in the Swedish National Young Artists Competition. He also received first prize in the well known “Tromp Muziek Competition” in Eindhoven, Holland, for ”his musicality, his sense of style in music from different periods, and for his convincing interpretations of contemporary works”.
Mårtensson performs as a soloist in his native Sweden and around Europe, he holds the position of Principal Clarinet of the Stockholm Royal Opera Orchestra. He is also the Artistic Director of the Linköping Chamber Music Festival. He teaches at the Stockholm College of Music, and has given Master-classes in Sweden and abroad, specially at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Musikhochschule Stuttgart, Prag Akademie, Musikhochschule Dresde and in some conservatories in France.
Staffan Mårtensson enjoys performing in various musical genres, (a lot of jazz too), and is an enthusiastic advocate of contemporary music. His collaboration with composers has resulted in the premieres of numerous clarinet concertos in recent years, such as concertos by Roland Freisitzer (Vienna Musikverein, February 2004) and by Johannes Kern (Vienna Konzerthaus 2002). In November 2004 he had premiere a new concerto by Icelandic composer Atli Ingólfsson.
Staffan Mårtensson’s recordings on CD include works for clarinet and piano by Brahms and Schumann and music by Swedish composers of his own generation. This CD received all honors of the international press. His latest release is the world premiere CD recording of John Fernström’s Concerto, written in 1936.
For performances of the Mozart concerto and quintett, Staffan Mårtensson uses a modern bassett clarinet , which enables him to play the compositions in their original versions. Audiences love the darker sound of this rare instrument.
Projects in 2005 included a series of ballet performances of the Copland clarinet concerto at the Stockholm Royal Opera, performances at Swedish, French and German music festivals with the Wind Quintett of Royal Opera Stockholm, and CD with contemporary Swedish composers (Phono Suecia), with pieces from Fredrik Söderberg, Carin Bartosch, Jonas Forsell, Hans Eklund, Sven-David Sandström, even jazz . In 2006, Staffan Martensson played some 42 concerts abroad, and recorded the Mozart Clarinet concerto, the Mozart Quintett and the Copland Concerto with the Royal Opera Orchestra Stockholm.
